ABSTRACT INDIA

With Diwali approaching let us celebrate with images of ABSTRACT INDIA – Buddha, Temples and Elephants created from recycled materials using traditional methods of quilted applique and patchwork embellished in light reflective jewels, beads, mirrors and sequins.

ABSTRACT INDIA – GREEN BUDDHA TEMPLE reflects the inner light of quiet contemplation, created from a simple shape of Buddha sitting in his temple, repeated in green, blue and golden hues. Each panel is adorned with a beautiful jewel set against a background embellished in beads and sequins, bouncing light around, capturing the essence of Buddha.

ABSTRACT INDIA – VIBRANT BUDDHA TEMPLE is a thickly padded wall hanging created from individual abstract temples, each adorned in beads, sequins and mirrors, capturing the intensity of heat and light. A golden background is encrusted with light reflective embellishment and as light and sunshine passes over the surface so it evolves. Individual temples are thickly padded to create deep furrows within the surface of the textile, establishing an undulating landscape. Brown silk panels entice the viewer inside, a peaceful retreat from the lively exterior. Vibrant patterned fabrics capture the essence of festivities and celebration, each embellished to enhance colour and form.

Christine Cunningham

Creating art from recycled materials using traditional methods (applique, patchwork, quilting) with a modern exploration into fabric manipulation and padded structure. Unusual materials include hair, plastic, rubber, metal, disintegrating fabrics and found objects. I source my treasures from carboot sales, charity shops and freecycle. Original poetry captures the essence of an experience, an emotional layering to which the viewer can relate on a personal level. I have two bodies of work. The Natural Collection explores abstract flower design and the seasons, religion, visions of India and Buddhism, childhood nostalgia and the seaside. The Womanhood Collection explores natural states of being including breast cancer, sexuality, the ageing process, anatomy, love, fragility and independence. I was inspired by my own experiences of breast cancer, both the physical brutality and fragility of living in the aftermath.
